essica Ramos has spent her life fighting for working families, advocating for labor, and organizing her local community. Born in Elmhurst to an undocumented seamstress and a printing pressman, Jessica was raised in Astoria, attended Queens public schools, and now lives in Jackson Heights with her two sons.
A strong union advocate, Ramos worked with Build Up NYC to fight for construction, building and hotel maintenance workers in New York City. Ramos also worked with SSEU Local 371 and 32BJ SEIU, where she helped building maintenance workers, office cleaners and public schools cleaners win contracts that protected their rights, wages, and benefits.
Jessica was a member of Queens Community Board 3 and served as Democratic District Leader in the 39th Assembly District. Jessica sat on the boards of the Jackson Heights Beautification Group and Farmspot, Jackson Heights’ community-supported agriculture (CSA) program. She has received awards for her work with the LGBTQ community and her advocacy on behalf of Women and Minority-Owned Businesses.

Jenifer Rajkumar is a lawyer, professor, and government leader who made history as the first South Asian-American woman ever to be elected to a state office in New York. A graduate of Stanford Law School and the University of Pennsylvania, Jenifer has worked across the country to empower disenfranchised, vulnerable and excluded individuals, at both the national and local levels.
Jenifer's parents immigrated to the United States with just $300 and a suitcase, settling in Queens where they got their start. Jenifer is proud to be born and raised in New York, the first generation of her family born in the United States.
Jenifer’s legislative achievements are nationally recognized. She passed a milestone legislative package that gives domestic workers the full protections of New York State Human Rights Law. She passed a landmark bill establishing New York State’s first-ever Asian American & Pacific Island (AAPI) Commission. As a strong advocate for public safety, Jenifer passed a bill to expand compensation for victims of crime, which the Governor signed into law.
Jenifer also has the distinction of serving as Senior Advisor to the Transition Team of New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Previous to her election to the State Legislature, she served as Director of Immigration Affairs for New York State. In this role, she built and led a first-in-the-nation $31 million project to assist immigrants in obtaining legal services.
Jenifer also practiced as a civil rights lawyer at a national law firm, where she litigated class action cases on behalf of workers, tenants and women. She was part of the legal team of Velez v. Novartis, ranked by the United Nations as one of the top 10 cases in the world advancing women’s equality. She also collaborated with the U.S. Department of Justice on cases combating corporate fraud and excess.
She worked in Washington DC as a fellow at the National Women's Law Center advancing policy at the federal level advancing women's equality.
Locally, Jenifer has also served as a Professor at the City University of New York (CUNY)’s Lehman College, where she worked to uplift our city’s youth.
Jenifer graduated from Stanford Law School with distinction for her pro bono legal work on behalf of vulnerable individuals. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania magna cum laude, phi beta kappa where she received the Alice Paul Award for exemplary service to women and families and numerous other academic awards. In her career, she received the New York County Democratic Party’s Bella Abzug Award, the WIN Young Women of Achievement Award, and was named both a New York Metro Rising Star by Super Lawyers, as well as a “40 Under 40” Rising Star by City & State.
However, her greatest award is the moments she has been able to help, serve and empower people, both in her community and around the country.

Robert F. Holden was born in 1951 and raised in Maspeth. He and his wife of 45 years, Amy, have lived in Middle Village for decades and have three children and four grandchildren. Holden worked as a graphic designer and served as a professor at New York City College of Technology (CUNY) in the Department of Communication Design. For 25 years, he held the office of president of the Juniper Park Civic Association, which represents the neighborhoods of Middle Village and Maspeth. During that time he also served as Managing Editor and Art Director of the Juniper Berry Magazine, the JPCA’s 96-page color magazine. First published in 1940, the Juniper Berry is considered one of the finest all-volunteer civic magazines in the nation. Holden also served as webmaster of the JPCA’s informative website, www.junipercivic.com.

Remittance inflows in the economy of Bangladesh are getting larger every passing year, matching with the increasing external
demand for its manpower. The ensuing development impacts of remittances, as a means of transfer of wealth, on socioeconomic
factors are increasingly viewed with importance. Remittances have helped improve the social and economic indicators like
nutrition, living condition and housing, education, health care, poverty reduction, social security, and investment activities of
the recipient households. The relative weight of remittances has also increased against most of the macroeconomic variables
alongside the contribution to GDP. Moreover, Bangladesh has been able to avoid any serious imbalances in BOP’s current
account, although it has persistent merchandize trade deficits. Not only that, but the export also tradable sector has thus far remained
unaffected from the Dutch Disease effects of remittances

As the world’s second largest garment exporter, Bangladesh is expected to export over $50 billion worth of garments by 2021. One of the major factors that drives Bangladesh’s booming textile and garment industry is the growing foreign direct investment in the industry. The country’s cheap textile labour, preferential location in the heart of the Asia-Pacific region, and government support are some of the reasons why an increasing amount of investment has been made in Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry.
According to the statistics from Bangladesh Bank, Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry experienced a surge in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the last fiscal year of 2016, with FDI totalling over $396 million, representing a 11% increase from the previous year’s $351.6 million. This surge marks a successful rebound of FDI from the economic slump in the country’s textile and garment industry after achieving a record high of FDI of $445.8 million in fiscal year of 2014.
With the total foreign investment in Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry in the last fiscal year, some $222.86 million was invested as reinvested earnings of the current companies that are already operating in the country. South Korea was the largest investor for Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry in fiscal year 2016 – several South Korean apparel companies invested over $111.6 million, representing over 32% of the total FDI in the sector, followed by Hong Kong’s $89.07 million. FDI from the United States stood at a modest $33.02 million.
Currently, Bangladesh is the world’s second largest garment exporter in the world after China. The South Asian country also enjoys tariff-free market access in the EU, Canada, Australia and other major textile and garments markets. An increasing number of international investors and famous fashion brands, such as Zara, H&M, Gap and Levi’s, are already manufacturing and importing clothes from Bangladesh.
